Getting Started with Clipless Pedals

Why Clipless Pedals Matter

Clipless pedals connect your cycling shoes directly to the pedals, improving power transfer and pedaling efficiency. Despite the confusing name, “clipless” refers to the absence of old-style toe clips. Modern systems use cleats bolted to shoe soles that click into the pedal mechanism.

Road vs Mountain Cleats

Road systems like Shimano SPD-SL and Look Keo use large plastic cleats that protrude from the shoe sole. These work poorly for walking but maximize power transfer. Mountain systems like SPD use smaller metal cleats recessed into the sole, making walking comfortable while still securing your foot.

Float Explained

Float describes how much your heel can pivot while clipped in. Some float protects knees from repetitive stress injuries. Zero-float cleats lock your foot in one position. Most riders prefer 4-6 degrees of float for comfort and injury prevention.

Learning Curve

Expect a learning period when switching to clipless. Practice clipping in and out while stationary before riding. The twisting motion to release becomes automatic within a few rides. Almost every cyclist falls at least once while learning—usually at slow speeds near stop signs.

Tension Adjustment

Most pedals allow tension adjustment. Start with low tension while learning, then increase as you become comfortable. Lower tension makes emergency exits easier but may cause unintended releases during hard efforts.

Shoe Selection

Match shoes to your pedal system. Road shoes with 3-bolt patterns work with SPD-SL and Look cleats. Mountain and gravel shoes use 2-bolt patterns compatible with SPD cleats. Some shoes accept both patterns for versatility.

Cleat Positioning

Proper cleat position affects comfort and power. Position cleats so the ball of your foot sits over the pedal axle. Fore-aft and rotational adjustments fine-tune the fit. Professional bike fitting helps dial in optimal placement.
